Building a Plex Server

Discussion in 'Gadgets/Tech' started by Tom Tom, Nov 22, 2016.

  1. I want to build a plex server, but I am not sure if I would just be better off with a Nvidia Shield.

    Anyone use these?

  2. Wow strangely enough I've just done this as a test

Setting up plex seemed very straight forward. I have it working through my NAS drive although I think the performance is probably slowed due to the NAS drive cpu etc

I've been looking at HP microserver which is not badly priced after cashback and it could be better in the long run. I checked the minimum spec for HD streaming etc and it all checks out. I have been looking at the shield too as another option

  3. I have a Synology NAS for TV Series and my Desktop PC has films and runs the server. It's just a huge drain to leave that running all the time and Plex is too hungry for NAS even on SD files, let alone H265

  4. Mine is running on a D link 320l NAS. Once it kicked in play back was smooth as you like

I'll be progressing it to a standalone device in either microserver or shield soon enough
